Quartet’s ROAD FROM HOME, SXSW Shows Earn Praise, Acclaim
Austin, TX — MilkDrive, Austin’s phenomenal alt-folk-progressive acoustic string band, will release on April 5 its debut studio album, ROAD FROM HOME, which captures the quartet’s soulful, textural, multi-layer mix of rhythms, tempos, flavors, improvisation and its harmony vocals.
After its Austin CD Release Show, on Friday, April 8, at Saxon Pub, MilkDrive plays a number of nationally acclaimed music festivals: Old Settler’s on April 14, “Woodsongs Old-Time Radio Hour” on May 9, Pagosa Folk N’ Bluegrass in Colorado in June, and Rockygrass in Lyons, Colo., at the end of July.
ROAD FROM HOME was recorded at Mountainside Audio Labs in Nashville, produced by MilkDrive and Bil VornDick (Alison Krauss, Bela Fleck), and engineered and mixed by VornDick.
Like its independently released debut live album, the band’s new studio album features fingers flying at “unbelievable” speed, original tunes that go beyond extraordinary and “impeccable” arrangements. Both “Back” and “Dry Creek Inn” from ROAD FROM HOME have the old-school sound, with haunting mandolin and fiddle, but thoroughly modern lyrics on topics such as love and death bring it into the 21st century.
Oklahoma Press raved about band members: “… Noah Jeffries plays the acoustic guitar like some sort of Django/Tony Rice hybrid clone reconstituted from their DNA in some crazy laboratory sometime in the distant future. Dennis Ludiker plays the mandolin like Thor made thunder and like Robin Hood shot his arrows. Brian Beken’s fiddle playing transcends our lowly dimension and can be heard in 15 parallel universes at the same time, man. NASHVILLE, TN—April 4, 2011—Rock and country icon Jerry Lee Lewis will be performing a special one-off live concert on Saturday, April 16th at Jack White’s Third Man Records in Nashville, TN. Jack White will be producing the record, as he does with all the Third Man recordings. Lewis will be backed by a stellar band that includes Steve Cropper (guitarist of Booker T & The MGs and Stax catalogue acclaim,) Jim Keltner (drummer for all four Beatles’ formative solo efforts, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and more) and Jack Lawrence (bassist for the Raconteurs, Greenhornes, Loretta Lynn and the Dead Weather.) The show will be recorded direct to analog tape at the Third Man complex in downtown Nashville. Lewis’ live show will then be pressed and packaged locally at United Record Pressing just down the street and will be sold at Third Man’s retail outlet within weeks much like the spontaneity the music business had in Lewis’ early career. It has been over half a century since true American original Jerry Lee Lewis first rocketed to the top of America’s pop, country and R&B charts with “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” and “Great Balls of Fire.” While those iconoclastic performances still define the essence of rock ‘n’ roll for millions, The Killer himself continues to thrill audiences around the world with his unique, scorching blend of rock, blues, country and gospel. Steel Guitar Tips
Hello fellow players,
I just talked to a wonderful old friend on the phone, Mr. Albert Talley, of the North Texas Steel Guitar Club in Dallas. Albert has been a wonderful friend for many, many years. I met Albert in the fall of 1957. Albert was about 15 years old and playing a brand new Fender 1000 in the Big D Jamboree. Albert went on to get a triple neck Bigsby and finish growing up playing in some wonderful western swing clubs in Dallas.
That was back when you could walk into a club in Dallas and tell them you were looking for a job and they would ask you what shift you wanted. �You wanna play the lunch shift from 11-4, 4 to 8 or the evening shift?�
No wonder the steel guitar players played so well, they played all the time. I remember some famous clubs that were working around the clock like Pam�s, Old Top Rail, Dewey Grooms, The Red Barn, The Blue Room and several other clubs. These clubs produced some of the best western swing bands I had ever heard. Actually, they were big jazz bands in disguise. By in disguise, I mean they had cowboy names, dressed like cowboys and played great cowboy western type songs, but the arrangements and solos were more like New York City in the jazz age.
Pure music, with great arrangements and always good crowds. Yep, I miss those days but treasure the friends like Albert Talley, Maurice Anderson, Billy Braddy, Johnny Gimble, George Peden, Robert Cadwalder, Peewee Warton, Jimmy Belkins and a whole world of great western swing players that I met while growing up musically in Dallas. Boy did I ever learn some great tunes in these days, all of which were and are standards. Not a Achy Breaky Heart in the bunch.
I got a lot of feedback on my last newsletter about steel guitar shows. It seems as though not all is dead and of course, I don�t get out to Arizona and have not done any shows in the southwest. I have been invited to some Los Angeles area shows but have not actually had the chance to work these into my extremely busy schedule so far, but I�m hearing and reading wonderful things about the popularity of steel guitar worldwide.
And of course as I�ve said before, there are players in their early twenties coming out of the woodwork. Twenty year old Eddie Dunlap is more astounding to me each time he comes in. He�s playing smoother, bigger and more complex every time I hear him. Like Chris Scruggs that if not already, will be known by everybody in the next few years. I almost wish I could start all over again.
There are a lot of new things and ways to learn in this day and time. Of course, I�m only judging these guys on how incredible they play, not by their jumping around and ability to do stage antics.
Remember last week when I asked the question, �What might you folks not like about going to big steel guitar shows?� The answer that many of you have given me is hearing everybody that gets up to play, not only play the same songs, but exactly the same styles. How many times can you hear Faded Love done on E9th in the style that Bud Isaacs invented sixty years ago?
Well personally I sort of have to agree. Just like lead guitar, there are many styles that you can play your steel guitar and some of them are very beautiful and interesting, whether it�s Jerry Byrd, Bud Isaacs, Curly Chalker, Maurice Anderson or Merle Travis - Chet Atkins style. There are many styles of steel guitar that can break the monotony.
If you only play one style, no matter which one it is, it�s going to be very easy for you to be a boring player. I was having lunch the other day with some airline pilots. I was talking about flying my Piper Super Colt to St. Louis. A couple of them laughed and snickered, �Well if you have all day to get there it might be fun.�
I said, �Why did you say that?�
They replied, �Well, we fly at about 450 knots. What does your Piper cruise at?�
I said, �About 140 knots.� But then I looked at them and said, �Do any of you guys have a tail wheel rating?�
One of them hung his head and said, �Well I really don�t need one with an airliner.�
My reply was, �You�re a pretty boring pilot if you can�t fly a tail wheel airplane.� I said, �You guys can�t even go where you want to. You might as well be bus drivers.�
That got a rise out of most of them. But it�s sort of like playing steel guitar. You might be able to play one note at a time real fast, but if that�s all you can do, you�re not really very well rounded as a musician. You need to know your chords, be able to read at least a good number system chart, play slow and beautiful with great tone and one more very important thing, you need to know hundreds of songs, not just new ones and not just old ones, but everything, especially the standards.
Our cousin instrument, the standard guitar, has gone on to be played with many styles. It can be a bluegrass rhythm instrument, a hard core jazz instrument, a beautiful country instrument and a solo instrument all by itself. Players that I recommend you listen to are easily found on google. Buster B. Jones, Thom Bresh, Leo Kottke, Tommy Emanuel, Merle Travis and Chet Atkins and the great Jerry Reed.
Steel guitar still needs to evolve to the point where it too can be accepted as a great, full rounded, every style instrument. The original styles on steel guitar should never be forgotten, however steel guitar needs to be taken to new heights. Don Helms, Little Roy Wiggins, Don Worden and Cousin Jody were what I call hard core players in the beginning, but they still played very well and beautiful.
The great players of today have gone way beyond the early beginnings and it�s up to the next generation coming to open this envelop up even further. So no matter where you are in your playing, don�t be afraid to try to expand the envelop even more. And this doesn�t mean jumping around and running across the stage either, because that�s not a style, it�s a joke.
If you want to take your steel guitar playing to the next level and open up your repertoire of tricks and styles, my Merle Travis style DVD is a great start. The discipline, timing and precision of execution required to play the Travis style will naturally improve the rest of your playing. If most standard guitar players can play it, why can�t you? This style is about the only style you can play by yourself and sound like a full band to whoever you�re playing for.
One reason a guitar is so popular and they get hired over a steel guitar player in the band is because of their versatility in styles. If you can only play one style, you�re not going to be anywhere near as valuable. Just because you haven�t heard it done, doesn�t mean that you can�t do it on steel so open your mind to new possibilities.

About Keith Whitley:
Whitley's brief career in mainstream country music lasted from 1984 till his death in 1989, but he continues to influence an entire generation of singers and songwriters. He charted nineteen singles on the Billboard country charts, including five consecutive Number Ones: "Don't Close Your Eyes", "When You Say Nothing at All", "I'm No Stranger to the Rain", "I Wonder Do You Think of Me" and "It Ain't Nothin'" (the last two posthumously).
About The Goins Brothers:
After the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers disbanded in 1963, Ray and Melvin performed together as The Goins Brothers until Ray’s heart attack in 1994 slowed him down. Ray retired in 1997, while Melvin continued as Melvin Goins & Windy Mountain. Ray would share the stage with his brother on occasion, mostly close to home in eastern Kentucky. Melvin Goins and Ray Goins, The Goins Brothers, have been playing mountain string music for 50 years. The music became known as "bluegrass" about the time they started playing professionally. Ray passed away in 2007.
About Molly O’Day:
O’Day was an American country music vocalist who had fame and commercial success in the late 1940s. Despite her short recording career, 5 years, she became a legend in her own lifetime.
About Larnelle Harris:
Larnelle Harris was born in 1947 and hailed from Danville, Kentucky, where his 30-plus years of ministry garnered 18 albums, won five Grammy Awards, and 18 Dove Awards. Jerry Lee Lewis possessed gospel roots and recorded gospel music several times during his career – but this selection (originally released on vinyl by Bear Family, as part of a massive box set) is very different from those previously released commercial recordings. Taped in 1970, in a small church on the outskirts of Memphis - the church that his then wife Myra attended - it reveals Lewis at a stage in his career when he renounced worldly music and returned to a music of his early days. "I believe in that old time religion" he declared and performed 20 gospel songs – Life’s Railroad To Heaven, Peace in the Valley, Precious Memories, Old Rugged Cross, Amazing Grace and I’ll Fly Away, among the most well known - amidst exuberant cries of “hallelujah”, “Jerry Lee is saved” and spontaneous bouts preaching the good word. At the same time, though, not completely overlooking the commercial aspects of his profession by also telling the congregation, which he respectfully addresses as “ladies and gentlemen”, that copies of his latest album will be on sale following the service. "You need the album and we need the money". Musically Old Time Religion is a rare insight into the musical background of this iconic figure who, accompanied by his regular band, performs with a greater raw passion than can be heard on any of his studio gospel recordings. But, just a few months later, he was back to his worldly ways and music. Sun Records historian Hank Davis provides a background to this stage of The Killer’s life in the accompanying 35 page booklet which also contains a transcript of the complete concert, songs and speech. A truly fascinating 65 minutes.

Although Bobby Lord enjoyed several minor hits in the late 1960s/early 70s on Hickory and Decca, as well as hosting his own tv show, this Florida born artist had begun his recording career on Columbia in 1954, thanks to songwriter Boudleaux Bryant sending a tape of the artist to the label's Don Law. Able to tackle both ballads and uptempo honky-tonk/rockabilly with equal ease, this 24 track collection mainly centres upon the latter as one of the latest releases in Bear Family's ever expanding “Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight” series. Lord’s initial session at Columbia immediately showed the singer’s vocal dynamics as the belter No More, No More, No More had equally solid backing from Chet Atkins (guitar), Don Helms (steel guitar), Jerry Rivers (fiddle) and “Papa” John Gordy (piano). Such similar Grade A musicians were to be featured on his subsequent sessions. Among several songs that Bryant contributed to the Lord career was the country novelty, Hawk-Eye, a recording that Columbia backed with several trade ads (though it lost out to Frankie Laine’s version, released by the same label albeit through its pop division) while I Can’t Do Without You Anymore and a cover of Johnny Cash’s So Doggone Lonesome are solidly country. There’s also some ballads – I’d Rather Be Blue and Why Should I Cry, among the cd’s four hitherto unreleased tracks – though the greater amount of recordings are firmly uptempo and well representative of the era’s changing trends. Rich Kienzle provides notes in the accompanying 34 page booklet (which also includes photographs and discography), explaining that Bobby Lord’s greater success came on television and that he walked away from music when he felt it was time, turning his skillls to a successful business career. He died on February 16, 2008.

Over the years Bonnie Guitar (born Bonnie Buckingham) spread her considerable talents over several areas of the music industry. Best known for the country-pop crossover successes Dark Moon, Mister Fire Eyes and I’m Living In Two Worlds (as well as over a dozen more country chart entries), she also mixed recording and stage performances with dj work, record production and label a&r roles including the discovery of The Fleetwoods for Dolphin (later Dolton) Records. But the 15 titles on this cd are the results of probably the most unusual – and most personal - session undertaken by the Auburn, Washington born entertainer as it’s purely the singer accompanying herself on electric guitar. Produced by close friend and top songwriter Don Robertson in February 1959, the songs comprised mainly old favourites and standards that the singer performed on stage. Among the titles are a couple of Eddy Arnold hits, I Couldn’t Believe It Was True and I Really Don’t Want To Know (co-penned by Robertson) alongside country hits Singing The Blues, Slowly, My Shoes Keep Walking Back To You, three Hank Williams compositions and Bonnie’s own If Teardrops Were Kisses. The result is music perfection. One of the purest voiced singers in the business, her vocals are perfectly complimented by guitar work that’s never overplayed. Yet these memorable, intimate sessions were never commercially released and Bonnie Guitar, in Todd Everett’s accompanying notes, has no explanation what producer Robertson has intended to do with them. Now, over 50 years later, they’re at long last available and remain as fresh as the time they were recorded in RCA Victor’s Hollywood studio. Certainly a gem well worth discovering.

Arguably the most unknown of the artists in this current batch of Bear Family releases are George McCormick and Earl Aycock, who recorded together as George and Earl, and now given the full Bear Family treatment by getting spotlight attention with this “Gonna Shake This Shack Tonight” collection. Their music was straight, down-to-earth hillbilly, firmly fitting the mould of the early and mid 1950s that developed from the sound of Hank Williams. It was a brief partnership though, lasting a mere two years and a dozen songs recorded. Both artists came from different locations. McCormack, a native Tennessean, worked with several bands and artists, including the Opry’s Martha Carson, before landing a deal with MGM and recording a dozen titles (over three sessions), also all released here, among them Fifty-Fifty Honky Tonkin’, a song that Fred Rose had apparently written for Hank Williams. Aycock, similarly serving a lengthy musical apprenticeship, also connected with the Carson show which led to the two teaming and securing a deal with Mercury. Among their recordings are Sweet Little Miss Blue Eyes and If You got Anything Good, both often cited as among the best country duet recordings of all time. But as the rockabilly era developed, George and Earl became quickly overshadowed by another duet teaming, the Everly Brothers. Subsequently McCormick led the Wagonmasters band for Porter Wagoner (and was Dolly Parton’s first duet partner on Wagoner’s tv show) while Aycock moved to Houston and began a long term career as a radio dj (although making some further recordings for Pappy Daily’s labels). Martin Hawkins provides detailed biographical information, together with interviews, in the set’s 38 page booklet that also contains photographs and discography.

Kimmie Rhodes wuchs in Lubbock, Texas auf, 1979 zog sie nach Austin, Texas. Willie Nelson lud sie 1981 in sein Aufnahmestudio ein, wo sie ihr erstes Album „Kimmie Rhodes & The Jackalope Brothers“ einspielte. Offensichtlich hat sie bei Super-Willie großen Eindruck hinterlassen, und das gilt auch für ihre zahlreichen Fans, die Kimmie Rhodes seither um sich geschart hat. Zu ihnen gehören neben Willie Nelson auch Wynonna Judd, Trisha Yearwood, Amy Grant, Joe Ely, Waylon Jennings, Peter Framton und andere Künstler, die alle Lieder aus der Feder von Kimmie aufgenommen haben. „Ordinary Heart“ hat Kimmie gemeinsam mit Emmylou Harris geschrieben, die für ihre Aufnahme eine Grammy-Nomination bekam.Authentische texanische Musik, irgendwo zwischen Singer-Songwriter, Honky Tonk und Texas Swing, das ist die Welt der Kimmie Rhodes. Mit ihrer klaren, warmen ausdrucksstarken Stimme gelingt es ihr, die Musik lebendig in Szene zu setzen, im Studio und live auf der Bühne. Ihre dritte CD „Angels Get The Blues“ hat sie 1989 im legendären Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee eingespielt, wo Johnny Cash und Elvis Presley ihre ersten Aufnahmen gemacht haben. Inzwischen hat sie ein rundes Dutzend Alben eingespielt, darunter eine Duett-CD mit Willie Nelson und jüngst die CD „Dreams Of Flying“. Mit „White Mountain Bluegrass“ in den Mai
Unter dem Motto „Mit Bluegrass in den Mai“ laden wir euch alle sehr herzlich am Samstag, den 30. April 2011 um 20.00 Uhr in das Gasthaus „Adler“ in Kleinkötz ein. Im kleinen, aber feinen Adlersaal hatten wir Ende der 80er und Anfang der 90er Jahre wunderbare Konzerterlebnisse mit Künstlern wie den Good Ol‘ Persons und High Country aus San Francisco, Laurie Lewis & Grant Street, Steve Young, dem Hugh Moffatt Trio, Mainspring, der Fox Tower Bluegrass Band oder Bluegrass Legende Jim Eanes, der dort mit Hard Times ein denkwürdiges Konzert gegeben hat. Seit einiger Zeit steht der Saal nun wieder für kleinere Veranstaltungen zur Verfügung und wir wollen dort an die gute Tradition mit akustischer Bluegrass und Country Music am Samstag, den 30. April 2011 um 20.00 Uhr anknüpfen. Es sind dort maximal 70 Besucherplätze vorhanden und für Reservierungen im Vorfeld freuen wir uns. In der Gastwirtschaft des „Adler“ befindet sich nun ein italienisches Restaurant "Il Cigno", wo man gut und preiswert speisen kann. Dies ist natürlich auch beim Konzert im Adler-Saal möglich. Wir freuen uns auf eueren Besuch!
